Britain’s most notorious prisoner Charles Bronson could be released after 30 years

Britain’s most famous prisoner has said he’s ‘coming home’ as he revealed his public parole hearing could take place only months from now.

Charles Bronson, 69, said he is ‘closer now to getting out’ than he has been in ’30-odd years’ and aims to be as physically fit as possible when he’s ‘walking out’.

The man, currently at HMP Woodhill in Milton Keynes and dubbed ‘the most violent prisoner in Britain’, also expressed his disgust at claims that serial killer Levi Bellfield had been caught groping a female visitor.

The boxer, who has spent more than 40 years behind bars, told the Mirror: ‘It’s looking good, it really is.

‘I’m closer now to getting out than I have been in 30-odd years. Up to now there’s not a date, but it’s looking like June, July.

‘I’m the first man in the British Isles to have a public parole hearing. All these decades I’ve done.’

Bronson, who has changed his name to Salvador in honour of the artist Salvador Dalí, was first locked up for armed robbery in 1974, but during his time inside he has taken hostages in 10 prison sieges, attacked at least 20 prison officers and caused £500,000 in damage in rooftop protests.

He has been moved prisons more than 120 times during his 43-year spell behind bars – much of which has been in solitary confinement.

It has been around 30 years since the prisoner’s last stretch as a free man.

Tom Hardy played the hardman in the 2008 biopic Bronson, which is loosely based on the prisoner’s life.

Bronson, who in the late eighties began a bare knuckle-boxing career in London’s East, added he’s still able to do ’95 press-ups in 30 seconds’ and exercises regularly.

‘When I go out on the yard that’s my hour of freedom. I’ve got a big smile, I’m happy. I’m walking out as fit as the day I came in. I’m coming home,’ he added.

In his phone-call to the Mirror, Bronson also expressed his disgust at claims that serial killer Levi Bellfield had been caught groping a female pen pal who visited him in jail.

Bellfield, 53, was allegedly spotted by a guard with his hand up the woman’s skirt as she visited him at Frankland jail in Durham, where he is serving a life term.

Bronson called Bellfield a ‘piece of s***’ and an ‘evil monster’, adding: ‘I couldn’t even smell my visitors, let alone touch them. That man should never be on an open visit.’

It was last month reported that a former model who formed a close friendship with Bronson after watching the 2008 Tom Hardy film about his life is campaigning for his release from prison.

Gemma Fernandez met up with the 69-year-old criminal last December after Covid restrictions eased at HMP Woodhill.

The former model, who lives in London, struck up the unlikely friendship through letters and video calls, named ‘purple visits’ – she was even allowed a visit to meet him face-to-face.

A prison source told the Mirror: ‘They’re very close. She had her first visit in December. They posed for pictures and everything.’

Ms Fernandez, who is in her 30’s, previously opened up about her visit to see ‘gentleman’ Bronson on Steve Wraith’s true crime YouTube channel.

She said: ‘It was his first visit in two years, it was a big, big day. It was lovely to see him. I gave him a massive hug.

‘He hasn’t had a hug in two years, so it was really, really nice. He was all excited, he took my jacket off, he’s a gentleman.

‘He was supposed to sit in a chair six feet away but apparently he walked into the room before I got there and said, “No way, I’m not having that” and dragged a chair from across the room. It was amazing. I thought it was quite a comfortable, cosy setting.’

The former model, who claims she has appeared in FHM magazine, claimed she’s never been to a prison before visiting Bronson last year.
